Spokane is located in the heart of the Inland Northwest and is the second most populous city in Washington. The Spokane River runs through the city and beautiful Riverfront Park in downtown Spokane. An array of enjoyable outdoor activities are right out our back door; including ski resorts, white-water rafting, camping areas, hiking trails, lakes, and the Centennial trail.
The city of Spokane is located on the homeland of the Spokane Tribe of Indians. We honor and express deep gratitude to the people whose ancestral lands we gather on for the Grassroots Radio Conference 2025. As Interior Salish people, the Spokane Tribe has maintained a profound connection to this region for generations. Their rich cultural heritage, rooted in the Spokane and Columbia Rivers, continues to shape the land and community through deep traditions of stewardship, storytelling, and ceremony.
The Spokane Tribe and the Salish School of Spokane are leading powerful efforts to revitalize the Salish language. Through immersion programs and cultural education, they are not only preserving language and culture, but also breaking cycles of poverty and inequality by strengthening identity and community resilience.
We are grateful to the Spokane Tribe for their leadership in cultural preservation. As we come together to imagine the future of grassroots media, we draw inspiration from their example of revitalization, resistance, and the enduring power of community.
Spokane is very welcoming to visitors and immigrants. We have a large and strong LGBTQ+ community, with many Pride events throughout the year. In fact our Pride festival is the largest annual event held in Spokane. And KYRS is a partner with Spokane Pride.
