KYRS – Thin Air Community Radio

Independent. Volunteer-Powered. Fiercely Local.

KYRS Thin Air Community Radio has been a vital voice in Spokane and the Inland Northwest since 2003. Broadcasting on 88.1 and 92.3 FM and streaming at KYRS.org, we are a volunteer-driven, non-commercial station committed to providing news, views, culture, and music that reflect the diversity and spirit of our community—especially voices often left out of mainstream media.

In the past year alone, KYRS has deepened its reach and impact with dynamic community events, new collaborations, and award-winning programming. Our “Get LOUD at the Library”concert series—held monthly at nxʷyxʷyetkʷ Hall in the Spokane Central Library—showcases up-and-coming regional talent, free to the public.

KYRS also shows up where our community gathers: from Spokane Pride and Unity in the Community to Brush on the Bluff and the Scale House Market, we’re engaging listeners on the ground. This June, we’re partnering with Brick West Brewing for Brick Fest 2025, and in September, we're proud to host the Grassroots Radio Conference 2025 with the Spokane Central Library—bringing independent media makers from across the country together in Spokane.

Our mission is clear: KYRS fills the gaps left by other media, creating space for marginalized voices and offering transformative programming on social justice, environmental issues, LGBTQIA+ perspectives, Indigenous culture, youth issues, women’s voices, and more. From hard-hitting national programs like Democracy Now! and Alternative Radio, to over 60 locally produced shows, KYRS is a home for independent thought and groundbreaking music in every genre—from blues to bluegrass, hip-hop to world beats.

Founded by local activists in 1999 and built from the ground up by volunteers and community donations, KYRS launched on air in 2003 as a low-power station. We became a full-power broadcaster in 2011, now reaching listeners across Eastern Washington with 6,800 watts. Governed by a board of directors and supported by members and volunteers, KYRS continues to be an independent media force in the Pacific Northwest.

KYRS remains committed to creating a more just, sustainable, and vibrant world through grassroots media. We invite you to tune in, get involved, and join the movement.
